Farr Point

Pelamis Wave Power Ltd, 50MW

The Farr Point Wave Farm project is located between 3 – 12 km of the north coast of the Scottish mainland, close to Bettyhill in Sutherland. The ‘area of search’, is shown on the map above, the first phase of the farm will occupy a much smaller area, roughly 3% of that indicated.

In 2008, PWP secured a grid connection for an initial, sub-10MW installation.  With a project connection directly to the mainland of Scotland, the Farr Point project is not reliant of transmission upgrades to the Scottish outer islands.

In March 2010 PWP were successful in securing a seabed lease option for the identified area of search from The Crown Estate. This was the world’s first leasing round for marine projects. The lease option awarded would allow the Farr Point Wave Farm to eventually be expanded to 50MW, contingent on successful grid and environmental consent awards.

PWP will be working over the coming years towards making consent applications for Farr Point by completing site survey work, environmental data gathering, upfront engineering designs and impact assessments. In parallel, PWP will be engaging with the local communities as well as local and national stakeholders to ensure the right project is developed while maximising the local benefits.

In April 2011, PWP initiated a formal scoping exercise as part of the Environmental Impact Assessment process, a consultation exercise is now being initiated.  The purpose of the scoping exercise is to provide stakeholders the opportunity to highlight any key issues that should be considered, and comment on the approach to site development.  If you would like a copy of the Scoping Report and Environmental Atlas please contact us.
