Scrabster Harbour

Scrabster Harbour Trust is now at an advanced stage of delivering its wide ranging harbour redevelopment programme to facilitate both the marine renewable opportunities in the Pentland Firth and to provide logistical support for the oil and gas developments on the Atlantic Frontier.

Scrabster’s strategic geographic location as the most northerly mainland port in the UK and ideally situated at the centre of The Crown Estate’s Pentland Firth licensing area, offers developers’ significant competitive advantages. Construction of the first phase of the harbour development, scheduled to commence in the summer of 2011, will create a deeper access channel for all vessels, deliver urgently required additional quayside lay down areas with heavy lifting facilities and offer an enhanced range of services including fuel and water at each berth.

These expansion plans are underpinned by the Board’s strategic acquisition of 32 acres of land, adjacent to the harbour and zoned for industrial development. The Trust has now been granted outline planning consent for the development of this strategically important site and the creation of improved road access, lighting and drainage will also be undertaken. When completed, this additional land will provide a “blank canvas”, offering a wide range of options for developers to create their own infrastructure, in support of their development aspirations.

Existing port users, including offshore companies and service contractors, have already recognised the enormous benefits to be gained by utilising the port’s current infrastructure provision and delivery of the enhanced infrastructure and services, will enable the port to realise its full potential.

Sandy Mackie, Trust Manager of Scrabster Harbour Trust, said: “Scrabster’s strategic geographic location offers significant competitive advantages to a wide range of industry sectors, including, renewable energy, oil and gas and fishing. The Trust’s proposed redevelopment and expansion programme in delivering improved infrastructure and services will facilitate a wide range of new business opportunities and deliver significant economic benefit to the local and regional economy”.
